Mahakantar ( The Great Forest) is the latest published novel by Anita Agnihotri. Written as a sequel to her epic novel Mahanadi, Mahakantar does not connect to the earlier narrative but complements it, putting together images to form the idea of the changes that are happening beyond the visible urban India. Mahakantar ( the erstwhile Dandakaranya, according to some) has found mention in the puranas. The novel follows a path from the south of kalahandi, where the river Indravati originates, to the southern districts of koraput and Malkangiri and then to Bastar region of Chattisgarh. The silent opposition by the Dongariya kandha tribals to the Buxite mining by the Multinational Corporation, the tension between the tribals and the Displaced Bengali persons from the East Bengal of 1960s, the ravaging of lives of the original inhabitants of Gandoana by manipulative state and non state actors, to divest them of their land, — all of these happening in the immediate past throws up an image of a bloodied, disturbed country,where communities are still trying to embrace a peaceful life. Chirantan the folklorist and connoisseur of local oral history travels this long distance, ending at Gadchiroli of Maharashtra where Indravati meets Godavari, trying to discover the India he cherishes in his heart.

লোক গানের রসিক চিরন্তন তার খাতাটি নিয়ে অজানা পাহাড় অরণ্যের পথ ধরে খুঁজে বেড়ায় অলিখিত ইতিহাস, নিজেদের ভূমিতে পরবাসী মৃত্তিকার সন্তানদের বেদনার ও স্বপ্নের সহচর হয়ে।
